Semiha Borovac

Mayor of Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Mrs. Borovac (1955) graduated in legal studies at the University of Sarajevo. In 1986 she started to work for Novo Sarajevo Municipality as an administrative inspector and became chief of the Municipality Principal Office in 1996. From 1996 to 2000 she was deputy minister of in the Canton Sarajevo. In this period she became member of the House of Representatives of the Federation of Bosnia Herzegovina Parliament. In 2000 she became member of the Sarajevo Canton Assembly and member of the House of People of the federation of Bosnia Herzegovina Parliament. In 2005 she was elected mayor of the City of Sarajevo. In this function she took measures to strengthen confidence between nations living in Sarajevo and to protect human rights. She is a prominent member of the Bosnian SDA party (Party of Democratic Action). On the international level, Mayor Borovac is promoting Sarajevo as the European city-symbol of multiculturality. The city of Sarajevo is a member of among other Metropolis, Eurocities, UCSEEC (Central and South-Eastern Capitals Union), International Association of Peace Messenger Cities, BALCINET, and European Coalition of the Cities Against Racism.
