Carlos Andrés Betancur
Mayor of Jambaló (Colombia)
He was a community leader in the Nasa indigenous process in the north of the Cauca for 15 years; he is a former governor of the Jambaló City Council, and a former municipal secretary of the interior and health. Mr. Betancur has participated in forums and international events representing the indigenous movement of the Cauca, as a delegate of the ACIN and the CRIC. He was elected as municipal mayor by the Indigenous movement.
Between 1992 and 1994 he was a member of the missionary team and the youth movement. In 1994, he took part in the communication program of the Jambaló Global Project that eventually built the first community broadcaster.
In 1995 he was secretary of the indigenous city council and delegate of the political committee of the northern zone.
Starting in 1998 he worked as an official in the Mayor's office.
