Amos Masondo

Chairperson of SALGA and Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg
Mr Amos Masondo was elected as SALGA’s Chairperson in 2004. He has been Executive Mayor of Johannesburg since December 2000. Amos Masondo has been educated in Soweto and has been involved in early black consciousness organizations such as the South African Students' Movement in 1972. He was imprisoned on Robben Island from 1975-81 because of ANC activities. Afterwards he served as a member of the Soweto Civic Association and in 1982 as a member of the Committee of Ten. He joined the General Allied Workers Union in 1981, was a full-time organizer from 1983 to 1985 and served as Acting General Secretary in 1985. He was detained under emergency regulations from June 1985 to March 1986 and again from July 1986-89. Councillor Masondo was a member of the Gauteng Provincial Executive Committee, and in 1997 was elected to the ANC National Executive Committee, where he heads the Elections Committee.
